New Orleans, LA (3/11/2019)— March 10th – 16th Limitless Vistas, Inc. will join thousands of Americans across the country to celebrate the valuable contributions of the AmeriCorps Members who pledge to “get things done” for America as part of the annual AmeriCorps Week. The AmeriCorps Week celebration honors the contributions and support of thousands of local organizations that make AmeriCorps programs possible. Every year, 75,000 AmeriCorps members serve through 21,600 schools, nonprofits, and community and faith-based organizations across the country. These citizens have played a critical role in the recovery of communities affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Maria, Michael, and Florence. They also tutor and mentor young people, connect veterans to jobs, care for seniors, reduce crime and revive cities, fight the opioid epidemic, and meet other critical needs.
As a part of the AmeriCorps week celebration LVI invited local Councilwoman Cyndi Nguyen of New Orleans District E to take part in the celebration by becoming an AmeriCorps Member for a day! Ms. Nguyen has made tremendous strides in her community by assisting hundreds of children and families through non-profit work and assistance programs. She visited our AmeriCorps crew who were working to assist the Greater New Orleans Iris Society (GNOIS) at the nature center located in City Park. There they assisted by thinning out the Irises and replanting Iris rhizomes. They also helped to improve the overall appearance of the nursery.
GNOIS focuses on the future of the native Iris species of Louisiana. The proximity of many unique species has increased the tendency of “hybrid” species to form. The organization recognizes the negative effect wetland erosion and environmental threats can have on the iris population in Louisiana and they are committed to restoring native irises in the wild and preserving each iris species. LVI members are committed to joining GNOIS in this effort to restore and maintain a species native to Louisiana.
